While apps like Siri and SayText do offer a good deal of assistance, Fellow Sumit Dagar had an idea for a more effective solution: a smartphone that's specifically designed for people who have trouble seeing. On Thursday, the Ministry of Human Resource Development had cleared the land for campus at Ranpur in Kota. But, with only two months remaining for the new session, the possibility appears a far cry. Companies like Cairn India Limited, Hindustan Motors, Genpact and Vakrangee Software Limited have tied up with IIIT, making the institute a preferred choice among students after IITs and NITs. The state government had announced the IIIT in Kota during the 2010 budget. So far only the partners have been indentified, grants allocated and land has been finalized. Peers’ scores to affect IIT selection

Students seeking admission to some of the country’s top engineering colleges this year don’t need to worry only about their performance. How others from their school board perform compared to students from other boards in the first leg of the two- tiered admissions to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) may also affect their chances at selection. Criticised for choosing a selection process that many argue discriminates against students of more competitive boards like the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), organisers of the admission test have decided on a new formula that may negate this bias. But the alternative admission process, made public late on Friday, also leaves students less in control of their fate than earlier. Apart from the percentile score obtained by the student in her class XII exam and her score in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains, the first stage of the two-tiered IIT entrance test, the overall

IIT-Delhi student hangs self over failed love

Depressed over his inability to converse with a senior whom he was seemingly infatuated with, a final semester student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, hung himself from a ceiling fan in his hostel room this past Thursday. A 24-year-old, whose name is being withheld by HT on grounds of privacy, was from Punjab and was enrolled in the much sought- after computer science course at the institute and had recently landed a job with an annual package of Rs. 18 lakh at global IT giant Microsoft. He left behind a suicide note, written in Punjabi, which stated that he did not wish to marry or even befriend the woman in question and only wanted to talk to her. He declared his resolve to end his life basing it on his failure to do so. “The incident was reported to us by IIT authorities on the same day and investigations revealed that the incident was triggered by the victim’s depressed psychological state,” said a police officer. The student

New Zealand society honors IIT Gandhinagar director

The New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) has inducted Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT-G) director Sudhir K Jain as a life member. The citation mentions that the place has been given for his exceptional services to society in recognition of his work in the field of earthquake engineering in India and abroad. The recognition was conferred on him at the NZSEE 2013 Technical Conference in New Zealand on April 27. IIT-JEE new pattern has logistic problems!

For past few years IIT’s have been trying to work in a joint consortium to revamp the IIT- JEE process, as most of them wanted to go their separate ways for conducting the entrance exams. After careful consideration and inference from the Education ministry, a two steps joint entrance exam has been devised and agreed for. The first step in the process is JEE (Main), which was conducted between April 7 and April 25. If a student qualifies this exam, has a rank amongst top 1,50,000 and also finishes in top 20 percentile in respective intermediate board results , then they can appear for JEE (Advanced) to secure a rank for getting admission in IIT’s and ISM, Dhanbad. These changes are a menace for administrators as the result of JEE (Main) will come out in first week of May and registration for JEE (Advanced) will start from May 8. IIT-Delhi is the coordinator of this year’s entrance exam and they have concerns over the logistic challenges while conduc

Two best practices being applied for bringing in class XII boards’ marks

The Joint Entrance Examination Interface Group (JIG) has taken the best of two procedures for normalizing the variation in class XII marks across several state boards and bringing them at par with each other in the best possible way. Instead of relying on one procedure alone, JIG — consisting of B N Jain, vice- chancellor, BITS, Pilani; Ayan Basu of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata; Dheeraj Sanghi, IIT, Kanpur; Pankaj Jalote, director, IIT; Delhi and P D Porey of S V National Institute of Technology, Surat — decided that for this academic session, 50% of board marks would be normalized by equating percentile amongst different boards and anchoring them to All India JEE-Main percentiles, and 50% be normalized by equating each board's percentile with JEE (Main) percentile marks of respective boards. JIG came up with a slightly varied formulation because it felt the class XII result data pertained to last year and students were not aware that t

Kota retains its charm as the top coaching destination for the IIT entrance exams.

The despondent look in his eyes was unmistakable. Sitting alone in a canteen in a coaching institute at Kota, Kamal Singh was accompanying a friend who was seeking admission there to prepare for the entrance exams for the Indian Institutes of Technology. Singh knows the difficulties his friend faces in achieving his goal. A native of Muiyan village in Bihar's Siwan district, Singh first came to this nondescript Rajasthan town in 2009 after completing his Class 12 with the same dream. He couldn't make it despite studying as many as 12 hours a day for two years and spending close to Rs 2.5 lakh, an amount that his small-time shop owner father arranged by selling their farm land. "There was no point in going back," he says. "I had come to be an engineer and could not have returned without being one." His dreams shattered, he now studies in a private engineering college in Jalandhar, Punjab, shelling out another Rs 6 lakh for th
