IIT's start blogs, campus tours to woo top-ranked students

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country have launched unique initiatives for the first time this year to woo students who have cracked the entrance exam and help them make an informed choice on which institute and course to choose. Blogs (IIT-Banaras Hindu University), an online ‘ ask a question facility’ (IIT-Bombay), Facebook groups (IIT-Kanpur), an Open Day for parents and students to visit the campus (IIT-Gandhinagar) are some of these initiatives, most of which are student-run. Results of the Joint Entrance Exam-Advanced (JEE Advanced) were announced on Friday and students have time till June 30 to fill in, online, their choice of courses and institutes. “At last, the IITs are learning what the students and parents always knew, that there is a competition for good students amongst IITs, and unless IITs try to attract students, they won’t get them,” wrote IIT-Kanpur professor Dheeraj Sanghi about these

Country's premier technology institute, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), will  invest around Rs 230 crore for its 400 bed super specialty hospital in the campus which will impart undergraduate medical course to students. The institute is expected to start the course in 2016 which will be recognised by Medical Council of India (MCI). This will be the first time that an IIT will impart medical education. Centre has already given its approval to IIT Kharagpur for the project and substantial amount of the fund is with IIT Kharagpur. According to institute director S K Som, IIT Kahargpur will be the first IIT to have technology driven medical course and other IIT may also join in later. Som said that according to Medical Council of India, which is under the health ministry, a  400 specialty bed hospital is required to start imparting medical education. “We have been pioneers on many fronts even in technology space and we are the first IIT to start this process.

Confederations Cup: Brazil beat Uruguay to reach final after late Paulinho header

Image
A towering Paulinho header saw Brazil edge out Uruguay 2-1 on Wednesday in an ill-tempered Confederations Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte to set up a final with either world champions Spain or Italy. Fred scored from close range two minutes from half-time to calm home nerves for the five-time world champions and Confederations title holders after Diego Forlan had first missed a penalty for Uruguay. But Edinson Cavani pulled a poachers strike out of the bag three minutes after the restart and thereafter the Samba stars were rocking before Paulinho rose high to plant a firm close-range header past Fernando Muslera in the Uruguay goal to cement a barely deserved victory. Matches between the South American neighbours have long been tense affairs – not least since the Uruguayans shocked the Brazilians in the 1950 World Cup final in Rio to deny their hosts a first title. But what gave this meeting added spice as both nations limber up for next year’s World Cup were

JEE topper prefers pure science

Image
He cut down on physical education classes, studied for seven hours a day during holidays and prepared meticulously for entrance exams. He has now secured an enviable score in the JEE (Advanced) exam which determines the eligibility for admission into Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) in the country. For Ananth V Kamath, a student of Air Force School, Hebbal, who secured 99th rank in the All India test, his love for pure sciences weighs more. He had also got a high score of 310 in the JEE (Main), the preliminary exam for eligibility to the Advanced test. Elated that he is, for having seen a good result out of his hard work, he is all set to keep that score aside and pursue his dream in pure sciences at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Ananth had a humble perception about his achievement. “I know a few students who have secured good ranks in IIT and are choosing pure sciences. For me, it

JEE medical rankers in a spot for lying in applications

Several high rankers of JEE medical from the state have put themselves in a spot by declaring themselves as domicile candidates of other states in their application forms. They had done this to increase their chances of getting admission in medical colleges in those states. But now, when they have secured high ranks, they are trying to find a berth in Bengal colleges, only to be told that they will have to wait till the merit list is exhausted and get admission only if any seat is left. What's worse, their selection in colleges of other states is also likely to be cancelled as they won't be able to produce a domicile certificate. "We have around 2,000 seats in the undergraduate courses combining all medical colleges," said a senior health department official. "Eighty-five per cent of that is reserved for domicile candidates while the remaining is open to candidates from other states. Many students who had mentioned Bengal as their second option

IIT Madras on patenting spree

Image
The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, is wasting no time patenting the technologies developed by its faculty members. It plans to leverage the Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) of technologies as revenue earners. The institute also found that filing patents in emerging nations such as Bangladesh and Africa provide more value for the innovation than registering them in advanced countries. This year, IIT Madras is likely to file nearly 40 patents, a 25 per cent increase over last year. Next year, the target is to reach 50, said Krishnan Balasubramanian, Dean, Centre for Industrial Consultancy & Sponsored Research. Last year, revenue from IPRs was about Rs 2 crore. “We are negotiating a large deal this year that will double or triple revenue from IPRs. On an average, we are targeting Rs 3-4 crore annually in the near term,” he told Business Line . Top fields Tield of nanotechnology saw the highest number of patents, as some of the faculty in t

Rare disorder fails to deter teen to secure top rank in IIT exam

Sixteen-year-old AmitMalav showed the world that where there's will, there's a way. An all India 87 rank in the joint entrance exam for IITs and a 91% in Class 12 exams are remarkable achievements. In Amit's case though, these achievements gain profound significance as he prepared for the exams when the doctors advised him against it. Suffering from acute ankylosing spondylitis which doesn't even allow him to sit at a place for more than a few minutes, Amit proved his detractors wrong by securing a high rank in the JEE. The inspirational teenager is a resident of Takerwara village in Kota district and studied in a government Hindi-medium school till Class 10. Amit was diagnosed with the disorder two year ago. Doctors advised him complete bed rest and warned him against continuing further studies. Firm on his decision to not miss the exams, he went on with his preparations. The disorder causes degeneration of bones. Amit cannot walk with

Super 30 IIT success story gets TISS' attention

After making actress Vidya Balan the subject of their research, social science students at the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) are now attempting to understand the rare success of Anand Kumar, founder-director of Super 30, who offers free coaching to poor students seeking admission to IITs. "Now, it is the turn of Super 30 founder Anand Kumar from Bihar. His pioneering initiative that has ushered in a silent revolution by helping students from underprivileged sections study in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has drawn the attention of researchers," a TISS official said. Vidya Balan and her outstanding performance in the film "Dirty Picture" as a "sex siren" had earlier been the subject of research at TISS. Mini Narayanan, 41, from TISS, is undertaking the research on Anand Kumar and his Super 30, so named because each year 30 students from poor families are chosen to undertake the free coaching. Th

IIT-Kharagpur to start medical course

The Centre has sanctioned a 400-bed superspeciality hospital on the IIT-Kharagpur campus which will have a medical college attached to it so that the premier institute can start a medical course. Once this happens, IIT-Kgp will be the only one in the chain to impart medical education alongside technology. A 45-acre plot has been earmarked for what promises to be a modern green building with minimal energy consumption at the south-east-end of the premises. Construction is slated to begin before Durga Puja. The Centre and IIT-Kgp have chosen public sector enterprise HSCC for the project. HSCC provides professional consultancy services in the health care sector to both state-run and private hospitals. "It is in the process of finalising the architect who will prepare the building plan, according to specifications of our own civil constructions cell," said S K Som, director of the institute. The institute runs a master's degree course in medical technolog

Youngest IIT qualifier Satyam wish to do Einstein

Probably the youngest to qualify in this year's IIT entrance exam, 13-year-old Satyam Kumar wants to be like Albert Einstein. Born on July 20, 1999, the boy a resident of Bhojpur district of Bihar and the son of a poor farmer Sidhnath Singh, has cleared IIT-JEE exam consecutively for the second time this year. He had qualified in IIT entrance exam last year at an age of 12 after getting special permission from CBSE to sit in the test but was not satisfied with his low rank of 8137 and hence repeated the test this year. In 2013 exam Satyam has secured All India Rank of 679. "I was not satisfied with my low rank and hence repeated the test this year. I was confident of making it this year again," the child prodigy said. Satyam's success story is full of thrill. His uncle Pashupati Singh, a clerk in local Veer Kuer Singh College, said the boy had no formal schooling till standard eight. This was due to poor economic condition of the family as well l

Former IIT Deputy Director questions functioning of new IITs

Image
The former Deputy Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has questioned the decision of opening eight new IITs simultaneously. The eight new IITs, which have come up in the last three years, were established on the model on which the previous IITs were constructed, 50 years ago. IIT Indore is one of the eight new IITs, where Prof. Khanna first served 18 months as a mentor for Resource Mobilization before taking over as Deputy Director for the next six months. Prof. Khanna is presently associated with IIT Bombay. Talking exclusively to India Education Review, he raised several questions related to opening of eight new IITs. “There definitely was no need to open all IITs simultaneously because it is difficult to find the right faculty so quickly. There is always resource crunch to efficiently fund eight IITs in addition to seven older ones,” he said. Calling the decision of opening the new IITs a political one, he said, “If memory serves me right, the gene

How IIT JEE made a small village boys life, who scored 39% in 12th board

My name is Rajiv Dandotiya – Dandu Bhai for friends. I am writing this article today from Copenhagen, Denmark where I work as an Assistant General Manager in a  drilling company – Maersk. This is the story of how I went from studying in a Govt. school in Rajasthan, sitting under a tree – to earning a PhD from a  European University. This is a story about the IIT-JEE – how it taught me the meaning of Learning and thereby made me who I am today. And it is a story of my Board Exams. But most importantly – it is the story of how I achieved my dreams by never giving up. I did my schooling from Govt. schools in Samod and Dholpur in the state of Rajasthan. My schools  were barely one – the teachers would hardly ever come. Many students would take tuitions and just memorize lessons and somehow pass the exam. I was never able to bring myself to do this. We never knew about engineering colleges – or what it meant to really learn something. After the close of every school year –

IIM, IIT study helps doctors manage time efficiently

The ever increasing load of patient care is putting severe constraints on doctors' time for teaching and research. Professors from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) have carried out a study to help doctors in a teaching hospital manage their time better. The study - Planning the Activities of Doctors in a Teaching Hospital by IIM-A professors Debjit Roy and K V Ramani, and IIT-B student Sahil Narang has drawn out alternate timetables for doctors to help them perform a variety of teaching, research, seminar, and in-patient care activities in addition to managing outpatient volumes. For the study, the team focused on the Christian Medical College Hospital in Vellore, where doctors' daily workload has grown primarily due to large patient volumes. The hospital handled a daily load of 5,000 outpatients, 2,000 inpatients, and 125 surgeries and large student intake per year - about 2,000 stude

IIT Madras ready with tech specification to make Aakash 4

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, is ready with the technical specification to manufacture Aakash 4, the ultra low-cost tablet personal computer for students. Likely to be priced at $50-$60 (less than Rs 2,000), the Aakash 4 tablet will be an upgraded version of Aakash 2. The project driven under the guidance of Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, the Aakash 4 tablets will be based on open specification. This means multiple vendors can manufacture the tablets unlike the Aakash 2, an Android-based tablet computer that was developed by the British company Datawind. There was some confusion, but the Centre has finally decided to go ahead with Aakash 4. Around ten vendors, including big players such as HP, Lenovo and Dell, have evinced interest in developing the low-cost tablets, said Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras. “They [the vendors] have come to the conclusion that the specification that has

Four from Andhra Pradesh make it to top 10 in IIT-JEE Advanced

Two students from Hyderabad secured the top two ranks in the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), which guarantees admission in the IITs across the country. Two others from the state, including a girl student, made it to the top 10 out of the 1.15 lakh candidates who sat for the exam on June 2. Seventeen-year-old P Sai Sandeep Reddy, a resident of Prakasam district who studied in a school in Madhapur, secured the first rank with 332 marks out of 360, officials said. He was followed closely by A Ravi Chandra, a resident of Hyderabad, who got 330 marks, securing him the second rank. "I am a big fan of Harry Potter and I love to read story books whenever I get time," said an overjoyed Sai Sandeep Reddy. Son of a school teacher, Sandeep prepared hard for the exam by devoting 12-14 hours per day in the three months leading up to the JEE exam. "I am still dazed. I never thought I would top the exam," Sandeep said. The tall lanky boy, who dreams o

Board delay for IIT test toppers

Most of the 14,000-odd students who have cleared the IIT entrance exam and been invited for counselling still don’t know if they are eligible for admission at all. Under new rules introduced this year, students are eligible for undergraduate IIT seats only if they rank within the top 20 percentile from their board in their respective social category — general, Other Backward Classes, Dalit or tribal. But 25 of India’s 29 higher secondary boards are still to specify the category-wise cut-off marks for their students. Earlier, the eligibility criterion was 60 per cent marks in the Class XII board exam for general and Other Backward Classes candidates and 50 per cent for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. All 29 boards have published their Class XII results. What they have not done is calculate the cut-offs and send the data to the Council of Boards of School Education to be re

Vessel cleaning boy from Karnataka shines in IIT exam

He helped her mother, a daily wage earner and washed vessels in a hotel in his spare time while he was studying, but financial hardship did not stop Manjunath from clearing the tough Joint Admission Test for MSc (JAM). Manjunath of Sullia taluk near Mangalore will now pursue his six-year joint MSc-PhD at IIT Bhubaneswar after clearing JAM. "I am leaving to Bhubaneswar on July 13 from Mangalore and join the premier institution on July 22," he told a news agency here. His mother could not meet the expenses of his education as she had to educate her daughters Nethravati and Rajeshwari, who completed PUC and BSc Nursing respectively. "Life became a hardship for us after my father left my mother and married another woman. She started to work as a coolie to support us. Most part of her earnings were spent for educating my sisters and hence decided to earn for myself and the family. I used to wash vessels in a hotel when I was stud

De-registration rule helps check rampant bunking at IIT-B

Image
A strict penalty to de-register IIT Bombay students who bunk classes at the beginning of a semester has brought down first week absenteeism from over 70 to a little over five in less than two years. Taking serious cognisance of absenteeism in the beginning of a semester, the institute had decided in 2011 that it will be mandatory for students to attend classes during the first week of a semester. The penalty for non-compliance, said IIT Bombay, could be de-registration from the semester. The institute further said that only genuine cases would be exempt, allowing for medical emergencies or family problems. "The first two to three weeks of instruction at the beginning of any semester are crucial for understanding a course. Missing out on such classes affects the overall performance. Thus, it was important to introduce this measure. After the rule was first implemented, students were caught unaware and over 70 were called to explain their absence. Although 10

Response to ToI article titled ’88% of IIT-B students say professors inept’

On Monday, the 8th of April, 2013 the Times of India published an article titled ‘88% of IIT-B Students say professors inept’. This piece on TOI claims to have been sourced from our article titled “Why Don’t We Study at IITB: Part 2 – Teaching and Learning Issues” that appeared on InsIghT’s latest print Issue – 15.3 We have been compelled to write this piece by the absolute, and quite frankly, appalling misrepresentation and sensationalization of an article we spent several weeks working on. Our article was a product of analyses on student behaviour and motivations backed by years of introspection by the faculty themselves about their own skills at pedagogy. The ToI piece, however, begins with a bold title claiming that 88% of IITB students think that our Professors are ‘inept’ and that the survey was conducted by a group of IITians from the current batch who were ‘fed up’ with criticism about their “poor performance” compared to previous batches. How any of that c

The Story Behind Kim Kardashian’s Baby Name (Did You Notice What ‘Nori’ Stands For?)

Image
North West … how did Baby Kimye get that name? On Thursday night, omg! confirmed that was indeed the name of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's daughter, whom the new parents are calling "Nori" for short. So … do you notice anything about that nickname? Well, if you combine Kim Noel Kardashian and Kanye Omari West's middle names, you get "Nori." But let's back up. Rumors first circulated in March that Kim and Kanye were considering naming their child North. “Kanye’s ego is something else, so he’s quite serious about the title," a source told The Sun at the time. “He also has a sense of humor though and knows how his self-indulgence is seen by the general public. It’s half tongue-in-cheek, half what Kanye probably feels is true.” However, one week later, Kardashian, 32, denied that North was a possibility during an appearance on "The Tonight Show." "That is not true," the reality star told Jay Leno. "That is no

Government Wants Skype to Set Up Servers in India

Image
The Centre has also decided to ask internet service providers and mobile phone companies to 'segregate Internet Protocol (IP) addresses on a state basis', a step that will allow the government to block social networking sites or any other websites and even internet telephony on select states or regions in the country. These decisions were taken in a home ministry meeting on April 23 that was attended by representatives from Intelligence Bureau, other security agencies, top police forces and senior officials from telecom and IT departments. ET had reviewed the minutes of this meeting. "Any service provider, who provides communication service in India via any media through Voice-over-Internet Protocol ( VoIP), should be mandated to be registered in India, having its office, server located in the country and therefore, subject to Indian laws. Necessary provisions to this effect may be incorporated through amendment in Indian Telegraph Act, 188
