IITs to increase the number of seats

Feted engineering schools, Indian Institut es of Technol ogyhave decided to increase the proportion of post-graduate students and Ph.D. scholars to 60 per cent over a period of time, a senior government official said. The IITs, which induct both graduate and post graduate students, aim to increase research capabilities at the institutes by this decision, said R.P. Sisodia, Joint Secretary in charge of Higher Education in the Ministry of Human Resource Development. "The IITs would increase their proportionof PG students to 60 per cent so as to focus more on research and also to provide more opportunities to students of diverse backgrounds. It would also diversify the profile of IIT with more 'inter-disciplinarity' and de-emphasizing the purely engineering course," Sisodia said. At India's older IITs, the ratio of post-graduate to graduate students is roughly in the 50:50 ratio, said Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT-Bombay. Of the nearly 1,800 students graduating

Second shot plan for NIT

Aspiring engineers studying for the JEE-Main, the exam they need to crack for admission to the National Institutes of Technology, may get a second chance without losing a year. If the plan — aimed at relieving students of “make-or-break” stress — is accepted, the new system could be implemented from 2015. The JEE Apex Board that decides the joint entrance exam’s format met on Tuesday when it considered the idea of holding the JEE-Main twice with a gap of two months between the tests to help students improve their performance. “We are considering the idea of holding the test twice a year. The first test may be held in January or February while the second one could be in April or May,” a source in the board told  The Telegraph . Sources said the idea was to reduce the “stress” on students for whom the JEE-Main was a “make-or-break” attempt to shape their career. Also, a second chance could help students avoid losing a year if they missed the first test because of illness or un

IIT turns down CBSE proposal to have two main JEE examinations

The IIT apex body on Tuesday turned down the CBSE's proposal of conducting two mains for the upcoming IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).  The CBSE board, which conducts the JEE-Mains, had prepared a proposal for two main tests to be held in 2014, one in February and one in April.  The members of the apex body agreed that two exams would increase the amount of stress on the students who will also be taking their board exams in February.  "The exams have to be student-friendly. If the students are given a choice of two exams, then all of them will obviously take both of them" said one of the senior IIT officials.  While this decision will be welcomed by IIT aspirants, it will disappoint those who were hoping to get two attempts to get into engineering institutes such as National Institute of Technologies NITs and International Institute of Information Technology (IIITs).  "There is so much pressure to do well in just one paper. I think two exams would be

How to talk with girls ??

Image
If you've just started speaking to a girl, you can bet she's deciding whether she wants to carry on the conversation or look for the next guy. Your chance to make the right impression is short and you have got to make each second count. If you start by asking boring questions like "What's your name?" or "Where do you come from?" or "Where do you go to school / where do you work?" then the conversation may turn out to be a short one. Girls get approached by guys asking these kind of questions all the time and if you're saying the same things then guess what? She's going to think you're just another "random guy" doing what "random guys" do. A lot of guys make the mistake of thinking that they need to be nice to get the girl, or be rich, or be intelligent, or whatever. These things all matter a bit (and a lot more the deeper you go) but what is most important at the beginning is that you are interesting. How can

And oatmeal, a complex carbohydrate is ideal. It is a satisfying breakfast cereal, and compared to any other grain it provides more protein per serving. The fact that it takes longer to digest and hence releases energy slowly makes it perfect because you feel full for longer. Oats also keep blood sugar and insulin levels stable, which helps prevent fat storage. Have it with skimmed milk or yogurt. Opt for skimmed milk Milk and its products are rich in calcium and can help keep your bones strong. Skimmed milk, low fat cheese and yogurt helps to break down fat cells. Bean it Foods that are high in fibre and are good sources of protein, can help you feel full for a very long time. And that, will help you control unnecessary bingeing. Protein has a very high satiety index and that is why m

Almost all those who are hooked on to the Internet to surf, download or entertain themselves would definitely be owning an broadband connection at home. It could be via a telecom service provider, your local cable guy or 4G wireless Internet providers. Some even own 3G USB Internet dongles for their work and entertainment while being outdoors. Most smartphone users today also opt for 3G Internet services on their phones and tablets. All these connections can be individually used on your PCs, laptops and handhelds efficiently.  Download, set up and activate the utility Though you can connect them all together on a single PC and access the Internet, the Internet speed will be only drawn from the last connected network, leaving the others unused. For instance, you have four different Internet connection sources A, B, C and D.  Your PC will access Interne

Image
The  India n Institute of Technology (IIT) have decided to increase the number of students by 60 percent, in an aim to improve their global ranking. The IIT council , which consists of all directors including the Human Resource Development (HRD) minister, decided that the institutes would not be reviewed by the National Accreditation Board (NAB). Also, in an attempt to restructure and strengthen the functioning of the institutes the directors of the University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education decided not be a part of the panel that appoints any of the IIT directors.   "The council decided that since IITs are brands, their internal review will be given to NAB and it will be accepted as accreditation. NAB won't be able to send its team to assess the IITs," MM Pallam Raju, the HRD minister, said. India needs NAB's recognition to be part of the Washington Accord which will aid Indian student to join foreign institutes, beside

IITs agree to international accreditation system

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to get the Washington Accord, an international accreditation agreement. This was decided on Monday at a meeting of the IIT council, chaired by HRD minister Pallam Raju and attended by chairmen and directors of 16 IITs and council members. The minister said, "The IITs would be subjecting themselves to an accreditation thereby setting a good example for other institutes. This will help us in getting the Washington Accord, which in turn will improve the mobility patterns of our engineers as their degrees would be recognised on a wider global scale." The Washington Accord is an international accreditation agreement for professional engineering academic degrees , between the bodies responsible for accreditation in its signatory countries. It was established in 1989 and at present has 15 countries as its members. Once India becomes a member of the accord, it will ensure more mobility for the Indian engineers as

IITs will take nearly 10 years to get to ideal teacher-student ratio

Image
Facing a faculty crunch, the Indian Institutes of Technology have projected that it will take the elite institutes close to a decade to get to the ideal teacher-student ratio. The government stipulates IITs must have a teacher-student ratio of 1:10, but at present, the ratio is an area of concern. Of 6,522 sanctioned faculty positions nationwide, 2,618 are unfilled. Thus, across campuses, there is an approximately 40% shortage of teachers. While student intake has risen by 54% since 2006 in the wake of the 27% OBC quota and the expansion in the number of seats, the teacher-student ratio at campuses is around 1:15. It is the worst at IIT-Roorkee at 1:20 and the best at the newer institutes of IIT-Ropar and IIT-Mandi, where there is one teacher for every two students. The all-India faculty strength is 3,904 at the moment. "Generally, the older IITs have been picking up about 35 to 40 new teachers annually," said an IIT director. "But student strength has r

Rajneesh Kapoor started the show with great wit describing how Indians are different from the others and how Indians have picked up English from the British in a grammatically wrong form. He continued further by describing the over hyper Indian Children and their mother's light way of scolding their child. After his stand up comedy, enteredGursimran Khamba. He started with describing how Indian people react to death especially on a funeral ceremony. The seminar hall was jam-packed with the IITians who generally do not get such entertainments due to their study pressures. It was

IIT Directors’ performance to be evaluated annually

There will be an annual performance evaluation of the Directors of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for enhancing accountability. The IITs have also agreed to open themselves to an internal process of accreditation in order to get into the Washington Accord, an agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering programmes. The Accord has 15 permanent members. India is a provisional member. Accreditation of other institutes is done by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), but IITs will hold their own review and it will be left to the NBA to accept or reject the internal review. This was announced by the Human Resource Development Minister M.M. Pallam Raju after the 47th meeting of the Council of IITs here on Monday. The Board of Governors (BoG) of the respective IITs would review the performance of the Directors for more accountability. How to get sleep faster in kota ??

A lot of people have trouble getting to sleep. You can develop insomnia at any age, and it can be very frustrating. Furthermore, this can cause us to have a lot less energy when we wake up in the morning, and this can lead to developing minor illnesses such as the common cold. Also, being unable to get to sleep can be irritating at times like tests on Sundays. Here are the steps : 1. First of all, take a relaxing bath. Fill it with bath salts/bubble bath if you want to. Lavender is very useful if you want to get to sleep, so try and get a couple of bath products that are scented with it. Don't splash around too much; just lie there and relax. 2. Do something relaxing before you go to bed. Listen to calming music, read a book, or do some writing. Don't watch TV or go on the computer - these things wake your brain up, meaning that, even though your body might be tired, your mind will still be wide awake, making it difficult 3. If you're hungry, eat a piece of fruit. Fruit

NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab 2013: Varun Grover’s “Maa Bhagwatiya IIT Coaching”

DearCinema profiles the six screenwriters who are participating in NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival. Screenwriters’ Lab, a 2-part workshop conducted by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) is designed to prepare screenwriters with original Indian stories for working with the international filmmaking community. Varun Grover answers five questions about his project “Maa Bhagwatiya IIT Coaching”: Tell us about your project. The script, titled ‘Maa Bhagwatiya IIT Coaching’, is a slice of life/coming of age/comedy look at one year in the life of a Lucknow kid who travels to Kota (the Las Vegas of IIT coaching in India) to prepare for IIT-JEE. My attempt is to capture the ‘hauwwa of competition year’ that haunts all Indian middle-class kids, especially in North India, as well as the nostalgia of my years in Lucknow coaching classes. The script also looks at the mediocrity, inferiority complex, hypocrisy, and humor of a middle-class ex

IITs agree to get accredited; JEE format to continue

After dilly-dallying for years, IITs have agreed to get themselves accredited by the National Board of Accreditation(NBA), the premier accreditation body in the country. However, considering their high academic standards, IITs have been given the freedom to carry out the review themselves and submit the report to NBA. IITs have also been asked to work towards reinforcing the brand so that it has better chances of making it to prestigious 'QS Ranking'of best institutions. IITs have also decided to continue with this year's format of JEE(advanced) test without any change. Talking to reporters at the end of the IIT Council meetingon Monday, HRD minister M M Pallam Rajusaid IITs agreeing for accreditation would help India become a part of the Washington Accord, an international agreement among accrediting agencies of 14 nations that recognizes engineering degree programmes of each other. India is now a provisional member of the Washington Accord. One of the main criteria f

Why you should'nt study late at night ??

When exams are bearing down on you it’s oh-so-tempting to stay up late to cram in as much information in as you possibly can. Most of the time this is a rather poor strategy to use, though if you’ve skipped out on studying all semester and have an exam at 9:00 tomorrow morning then staying up all night is your only real choice. For the rest of the students out there, come exam time the last thing on your mind should be late night study sessions. There are three really strong reasons why you should just pack it in at an appropriate time… You’ll Be More Productive Let’s say you wake up at 9:00 a.m. and by 10:00 a.m. you’re busy studying. You study all day, taking breaks for meals, and eventually 10:00 p.m. rolls around. At this point your mind is probably fried, you’re physically exhausted, and your eyes ache from staring at tiny textbook font all day long. Over the day your productivity has decreased by large measures – continuing to study isn’t going to be the smart choice here.
