IIT-JEE: Students may not need coaching classes

Are coaching classes really needed to get into IITs? Every year, you come across ads plastered across all forms of media with tall claims of their students making into IITs, after being coached by them. But, does it really work? Are coaching classes, where students are intensely trained and, of course, coached, absolutely vital for success in JEE? IIT data reveal surprising results Data collected by the IITs during the admission processes show that almost half the candidates said they had studied on their own without any help from coaching institutes. Every student who appear for the JEE are asked whether they prepared for the test on their own or “via other methods.” The second option covers classroom coaching, study materials provided by the coaching classes, mock tests etc. Candidates, to allay any fears they might have, are also told that their answer would have no bearing on their chances of admission into the IITs. Are fewer students opting for coaching ?? Over the years,

JEE (Main) offline test in Hyderabad

The woes of JEE (Main) aspirants from the city are likely to end next year. The Union HRD ministry is “actively considering” to set up test centres in Hyderabad for conducting the offline JEE (Mains) test in April 2014, for which there will be a large number of applicants from the city. Thousands of students from the city have been facing severe hardships in appearing for the JEE offline exam in the last two years as there were no test centres in the city. Nearly 70,000 students and their parents from the city were forced to travel to Warangal, Khammam, Guntur etc to appear for the test.Test centres for the online mode of JEE (Mains) are available in the city since 2012, but there were no takers for that. The large scale influx of Hyderabad students to these tier-II cities had been causing traffic jams and accommodation problems. Parents had to incur huge expenses for travel, boading and lodging facilities. In 2012, several city students missed the test in Warangal as they got s

IIT expert suggests chemical changes for better life-span of machinery parts

The life of machinery parts could be extended three times by introducing some chemical changes in pure iron, a student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Pallav Gupta, who is carrying a study under a project funded by Council of Science and Technology, Uttar Pradesh, said. Gupta, a researcher in ceramic engineering, IIT-BHU and principle investigator of the project, has claimed that the iron, with its changed chemical and physical properties, can have increased compressive strength and undergo less erosion. "This kind of iron is prepared by using powder metallurgy technique. In this, electrolytic iron (that is pure iron in its powered form) is mixed with alumina (aluminum oxide). The properties of iron change by mixing only 5% of alumina. "The hardness, compressive strength and the strength of standing friction were measured and we saw changes as compared to normal iron," he said. Other properties of iron, specially rusting wer

JEE Advanced 2013 toppers

Joint Entrance Exam- JEE (Advanced) 2013 results got declared earlier than expected, on Friday, June 21, 2013. The exam was conducted on June 2. Pallerla Sai Sandeep Reddy, a student of Sri Chaitanya Narayana IIT Academy, Andhra Pradesh bagged the All India first rank. The same guy has also topped EAMCET engineering stream whose result was declared on June 5, 2013. Interestingly, P Sai Sandeep's classmate from the same coaching institute has secured All India Rank 2 at JEE Advanced. And with just one mark separating the ranks, we have the third topper. Here’s what all the three Toppers told shiksha correspondent Madiha Jawed about JEE, their preparation strategy and IIT plans! How does it feel being the JEE Advanced 2013 topper? P Sai Sandeep Reddy,JEE Advanced 2013 Topper I am delighted. I have been preparing for this for the last 5 to 6 years i.e. since class 7. Wheels of change at IIT-B? Tumtums to bicycles

For several years, tumtums have been the only centralized transport system available for students and staff on the IIT-Bombay's Powai campus. But with the total strength of residents swelling to almost 20,000 in the last five years, the 20 tumtums or minibuses are just not enough. In fact, IITians equate the tumtums to the Virar fast local during peak hours. Students also claim that the frequency of tumtums is bad and the distance between two stops is huge, forcing them to hire autorickshaws. The inconvenience caused to residents has forced the institute to seek alternative models for transport, including encouraging students to use their own bicycles, running CNG-run regular buses and building a sheltered walkway from the hostel to the main building and other structures. While several plans are under consideration, for immediate relief, the institute has decided to encourage students to use their own bicycles on the campus. For students, who cannot afford to buy one, the institut

Kapil Dev ordered Dawood Ibrahim to leave dressing room in 1987

Image
Not exactly a denial but former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev has "differed" from former teammate Dilip Vengsarkar's version of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim walking into the dressing room in Sharjah in 1987 and offering Toyota cars to team members.  "Yes, I remember a gentleman walking into our dressing room in a game in Sharjah and wanting to talk to the players," Kapil Dev told Aaj Tak-Headlines Today.  "But I asked him to leave the dressing room immediately as outsiders were not allowed. He listened to me and then walked out of the dressing room without saying anything. Later, someone told me he was a smuggler from Bombay and his name was Dawood Ibrahim. Beyond that nothing happened," he said.  Kapil Dev said he wasn't aware of Toyota cars being offered to the players. "No such offer came to my knowledge then. If Dilip is saying it now, he would know more than me."  Vengsarkar's version of the incident was more or less

IIT-Hyderabad tops in research among new institutes

Image
The Indian Institute of Technology here has taken the lead among the eight new IITs in quality of research. Equipped with strong research facilities, IIT-H has been rated nine on the h-index along with IIT Ropar, while the other six IITs in Patna, Indore, Mandi, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar and Bhubaneshwar were rated in the band of two and five. This was revealed in a recent journal citation assessment commissioned by the new IITs. The h-index, named after Argentine-American physicist Jorge E. Hirsch, measures the impact of a scientific research publication of an institution or an individual researcher based on the number of citations per publication. The assessment revealed that research from IIT-H had been cited 535 times compared to 362 for IIT Ropar. The figures for most other new IITs are in just two digits. Expressing happiness over the development, IIT Hyderabad Director U.B Desai credited the faculty for the honour. Next target The effort now will be to improve the h-in

IIT’s ‘Sampark’ turns out to be a brainteaser

Image
With its three competitions, ‘Sampark 2014’, the outreach event of ‘Shaastra’, the annual technical festival of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, turned out to be a brainteaser. The second edition was held at Kumaraguru College of Technology here on Saturday. ‘Sampark’ is a series of workshops, events, lectures and qualifiers that are held in cities across India in an effort to bring ‘Shaastra’ closer to everyone. All three events – auto quiz, puzzle champ, and Project X – challenged the student participants in logic, mathematics and reasoning, rather than on mere engineering. More than 1,000 students from Coimbatore and nearly 400 from other cities such as Salem, Madurai, and Tiruchi, participated in the events. The event was to reach out to engineering students in Coimbatore and other cities of Tamil Nadu in an effort to motivate them to break boundaries. Besides the three competitions, workshops on robotics and Rubik’s cube were held. Demonstrations on various inte

IIT, IIM students can now self-attest certificate copies

Students aspiring for admission to IITs, IIMs or central universities need not scout for a gazetted officer anymore to get copies of their certificates attested as the HRD Ministry has asked institutes under it to accept self-attested documents. The move which brings to an end the age-old practice and provides a much needed relief to students, has come into effect from this session, ministry officials said. The original documents will have to be produced only at the time of admission, they said. The development comes in wake of a directive from the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension which had asked various ministries and departments to examine the proposal. Terming the method as "citizen friendly", it said "obtaining either an attested copy or affidavit not only costs money but also involves wastage of time of the citizens and the government officials". In fact, the Second Administrative Reforms Commission in its 12th report titled '
